Arsenal Victory Powered by Substitutes and Rugby Union Influence
Mikel Arteta states that the "finishers" in his squad could be increasingly crucial than starters this season—an approach he admits adopting from rugby union.
Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard each scored—assisting one another—following their introduction as second-half substitutes to secure a 2-0 victory for Arsenal against Athletic Club in the first Champions League match.
Recent Struggles and Managerial Trust
The 24-year-old has faced a tough spell lately, losing form and being relegated to substitute duty, with recent acquisition Eberechi Eze chosen on the left flank.
Trossard, meanwhile, has been limited three substitute appearances this season after featuring 56 times during the previous term.
Arteta stressed that being a substitute does not diminish a player's importance, drawing parallels with rugby's terminology of "finishers".
"They are at least equally crucial, or even more important," Arteta commented. "Substitutes are going to be decisive in the coming months on occasion than the starters."
Squad Depth and Missing Stars
The North London side are currently missing star performers such as the captain, the England international, and Kai Havertz due to fitness issues, while the central defender was only fit enough for the bench.
As a result, Arteta to turn to recent additions earlier than planned, with several of them named in the lineup against the Bilbao-based outfit.
He confessed that omitting individuals is emotionally challenging, but praised the impact of both Martinelli and Trossard after initially benching them.
"Very pleased since it is hard on a personal level to leave players out," he expressed. "Every time you reveal the starting eleven, you let down a group of players."
Squad Unity and Confidence Boost
Martinelli, who has been a essential component under the manager, experienced a dip in form that sparked fan debate about his place in the team.
He was conscious about the criticism and it dented his confidence, despite netting 10 goals across all competitions—featuring a memorable goal in the Champions League last eight clash against the Spanish giants.
Arteta has always shown faith Martinelli in big games and felt thrilled to see the attacker play a decisive role in the win.
"He fully deserves it," said Arteta. "I admire Martinelli. The way he applies himself, his commitment, optimism—what he gives for the team."
Teammates ran to congratulate him after his goal, with the defender pointing at the name on the shirt in before the traveling supporters.
"That's the spirit," added. "That's why I love being around them every day. The way they support each other is authentic."
"They desire the success for each other and they appreciate someone who works hard consistently like Martinelli has."
"I was certain that Gabi would respond in this manner. When you test him, he elevates to the task. Such moments that will hopefully boost his confidence—he remains an exceptional talent."
