One ranking policeman who rushed to the assistance of a colleague that got attacked by a blade-wielder has been awarded the King's Commendation for Bravery.

Sgt Tim Ansell struggled against twenty-seven-year-old Jacob Brown subsequent to he pressed a blade to the throat of his colleague Sergeant Marc Foster.

Brown initiated the assault as the officers and their third officer, PC Marcus Wolstencroft, were conversing to a motorist after a vehicle incident in Whalley Range in mid-2023.

Brown knifed and cut both Sgt Ansell and Sgt Foster prior to PC Wolstencroft stunned him with a Taser.

"Officer stabbed," the constable was heard to say over his communication device.

Officer-mounted and dashboard camera video made public by the force showed Brown, wearing in dark clothing with a hood up, rush to Sergeant Foster from behind with a blade outstretched.

He ran into the policeman who lost balance and fell to the ground, before Sgt Ansell jumped in and struggled to restrain him to the floor even though being multiple times hit with the blade.

Police Constable Wolstencroft drew his Taser and awaited a safe opportunity, concluding the struggle to an finish.

Sergeant Ansell can be heard to say: "Please provide help on my neck now, I've been stabbed in the neck."

Sgt Ansell sustained multiple lacerations to his throat and additional cuts to his arms and body, while Sgt Foster experienced slash wounds.

The department said Sergeant Foster employed his hands to stop his partner's blood loss before medical personnel reached the scene.

This most recent award arrives after the three officers won internal Bravery Awards in fall 2023 and the prestigious bravery honor from the regional officer association in spring 2024.

They further earned a North West Bravery Award in summer 2024.

"The efforts of each policeman in the end saved themselves and ensured no civilians experienced any injuries."

Brown was given to an indefinite hospital order in spring 2024, per officials.
