Ex-president Trump has yet again stated he would influence FIFA to pull global soccer tournament matches from a host city based on municipal governance, with Massachusetts emerging as the third urban area to face such warnings from the American leader. Furthermore, Trump remarked he would evaluate parallel steps against LA for the 2028 Summer Games due to potential security concerns.

Although Trump does not have official jurisdiction to personally cancel either event, he may lobby the respective governing bodies in charge of each competition to change locations.

Context of Remarks

His statements were made during a press event with Argentina's leader Milei, who was present in the executive mansion following the announcement of a multibillion-dollar financial assistance for the South American economy. At the close of the event, a reporter asked Trump about a recent unauthorized gathering in downtown Boston where authorities were targeted and a police vehicle was ignited. The correspondent also questioned if these incidents could cause the removal of organizing rights for the expanded soccer tournament.

“It's possible to take them away,” the former president said concerning the FIFA World Cup games, scheduled to be staged at Gillette Stadium. “She is poor … she is far-left, and they’re occupying areas of Boston. It's a significant assertion, isn't it?”

Unauthorized gatherings, a social media-driven phenomenon where groups of people assemble on city streets late at night to perform stunts, have become a ongoing problem in US urban areas since the coronavirus restrictions. Current incidents have become aggressive in Massachusetts, specifically in the city. Nevertheless, these gatherings are generally not considered tied to any particular political ideology.

“In cases where a mayor is doing a bad job, and I feel exist dangerous circumstances, I would call the organization's president, who is outstanding, and tell him it should be shifted to an alternate venue,” Trump stated during the event. “He'd do that. Their head, the newly elected president, was chosen to her position in this year and has so far not hold a public appearance with Trump, but she indicated that she hopes for a meeting with Trump at eventually.

He also criticized Gavin Newsom’s handling of the LA wildfires, saying that a parallel incident could cause the cancellation of the Games.

“When Newsom refuses to cooperate, we will have to be firm,” he commented.

His statement was similarly unambiguous for the Massachusetts city.

“Boston must address these issues,” Trump stated. “That is I can say.”
