‘Every minor detail – execute them’: The striker’s path from gurney to scoring with the Basque club
The debut appearance Gorka Guruzeta competed in the UK, an young appearing for the reserve team against Bundesliga youth at the English ground in September 2015, he found the net. The second time he took the field in England, against Sunderland weeks after, he converted. Another occasion, against the Citizens not long later, indeed, he repeated the feat. When he returned to the northwest to take on Manchester United at Leigh’s ground in that year, he did it once more. A spectacular strike, too. “In fact,” he says, “it’s a top-class goal in my career.” Thus the club did what they had to do: they took him off.
“I got well angry,” the forward reveals, before breaking into laughter. “There must be a video somewhere. Our match against United and I was in fine form. I wasn’t allowed to feature the final 45 minutes: I was without a signed my contract, I kept finding the net, there were lots of rumours, you know how it is. No confirmation on interest from Newcastle, but I recall seeing about the Red Devils, standard transfer gossip. It’s unclear if it was accurate, but supposing an offer came, I’d have chosen to stay at Athletic. I’m fortunate to be here.”
Real Sociedad ease tension with bizarre win in unique Basque clash
At the training ground, the Basque Country, the morning session is about to start; after it, the quick travel to Loiu airport and another flight to England, on this occasion to play Newcastle in the European elite competition on midweek. Mentioning that phrase brings a smile to his face. It’s turning out to be a challenging campaign for Athletic, partly because of the pressures of competing at this level. Beaten in added time in the weekend clash, they have managed just one win of their last eight matches and fallen to the Gunners and Borussia Dortmund in the continental stage. But, look at the overall situation, the major occasions he’s experienced and those that lie ahead, and there’s a kind of quiet appreciation from him.
In the the period since he had returned to the club, Gorka has been a Europa League semi-finalist, stopped at the gates a domestic final by United, and has traveled on a traditional boat along the Nervión river flanked by a huge crowd after securing the Spanish cup, the team’s initial silverware in 40 years. Now he is Athletic’s top scorer in the UCL, where they are countercultural and making their first appearance in ten years. “I never imagined this,” he admits.
The player believed it hard enough just to earn a spot and that proved true. The son of the former Real Sociedad player his father and a dedicated fan at the opposition side, the forward is a product of Antiguoko, the San Sebastián club that nurtured the Arsenal manager, Xabi Alonso and the Bournemouth manager. He signed for Athletic at his teens but after making his senior debut in the 2018 season, he went through a torn cruciate, dropped, a demotion and a return before he could finally secure an opportunity, coming back aged 26 to experience the peak of his career.
“Entering the youth system doubting you’ll make the senior squad but each step you progress through you’re still there and you can observe the approach. You arrive and then … you’re sent away.” He featured briefly in six matches in six games between his debut and early 2019. “Subsequently I returned to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. Several appearances at that level and I tear my cruciate.
“A massive setback but I reflect on it as a turning point because it made me change the outlook. The rehabilitation process is challenging, but it helps. You develop habits previously lacking. It’s not about neglect, but I did the sessions and then return home, as a youngster does. In the facility, all resources are available, so take full advantage. Work, precaution. Strength training. If your hips aren’t balanced, address that. Assuming ankle mobility is good, improve it more. All those ‘silly things’: perform them.
“In the first team you’re going to collide with opponents who have been in battles repeatedly. Extremely powerful. Reviewing old images: my legs are chicken legs. Thus incidents occur. Present-day images and it’s totally different. Injury made me see that. Training finishes, but there’s more to do. Peers are prepared, really ready; you have to be too.”
You also have to play. The striker moved in tears in the pandemic season, in his early twenties, joining the second tier. With Sabadell in the 20-21 campaign, he got three strikes in numerous matches. With Amorebieta in the following period, the goals started to flow. “Players go through it: transfers, releases. Should you reverse it, work, believe, and should the time come the requirement appears in your position, they might come back for you. Preparation is key. When they decided to call again, a fantasy realized. Lifting the cup, play in Europe, and make the UCL … pfff.”
Little surprise he states appreciate the experience. All the more so after the prior campaign which, on occasions, was involved suffering. From top scorer with sixteen goals, his output dropped to seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
