He has maintained his non-guilt concerning the charges

Former FBI head James the ex-FBI chief has denied the charges to making false statements to congressional representatives and hindering a legislative process.

His lawyer submitted the response representing him in a federal court in Alexandria, Virginia on Wednesday.

The defense lawyer announced he would seek to have the case terminated for multiple factors including that his defendant, a critic of President Donald Trump, was being selectively prosecuted.

The former director was indicted soon after the former president pushed his chief prosecutor to proceed against him.

Legal Proceedings

At the proceedings on mid-week, the defense counsel Mr Fitzgerald informed the magistrate they intended to present multiple legal requests to throw out the legal matter before a trial, claiming the legal action was vindictive and that a US attorney was unlawfully designated to assume control of the case.

James Comey's legal matter was originally managed by Erik Siebert, who resigned under pressure from the former president after his investigation into another rival - NY AG Letitia James - was unable to bring criminal charges.

Judicial Environment

James Comey seemed in good spirits as he walked into the court on mid-week, speaking with his legal team and making jokes. He was supported by his wife, his wife and daughter Maureen Comey, a federal prosecutor who the Trump administration terminated.

Upon hearing to the judge state his constitutional guarantees and the two counts against him in the courtroom on mid-week, James Comey was inquired if he comprehended the charges.

"Yes your honour. Thank you very much," he informed the court.

Background Context

Mr Comey was the chief of the Federal Bureau of Investigation from four years and was dismissed about four months into Donald Trump's first administration as national leader. At the moment, the director was leading an investigation into Russian election interference and whether there were any relationships between Moscow and the election effort.

While in office, James Comey caused a backlash from liberal politicians when he announced just shortly prior to the 2016 presidential election that he was investigating Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server. Legal actions against Hillary Clinton were not pursued, resulting in disapproval from the Republican party as well.

Current Allegations

Government attorneys allege James Comey lied to the legislature during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing in September 2020 when he was being questioned about both the Clinton investigation as well as the foreign influence inquiry. They say he provided false information to the legislative body by saying he had not approved someone at the agency to leak to journalistic entities data about the FBI investigations.

Prosecutors also accuse James Comey of "wrongfully trying to affect, block and impede" the committee by giving misleading testimony to it.

Public Statements

In a video Mr Comey shared to his online platform after he was accused, he declared he was wrongly accused and alleged the former president of behaving like a "autocrat".

"Our household have known for years that there are ramifications to challenging Donald Trump," he said. "We refuse to live on our knees."
"I'm innocent," he continued. "Therefore proceed with a legal proceeding."

The charges against Mr Comey came after the former president published on social media insisting on his attorney general, Ms Bondi, prosecute James Comey and other people.
