Labuschagne Omitted from Australia's ODI Lineup Against India
The Australian selectors have left out Labuschagne from Australia's three-game ODI series versus India, with high-performing Queensland teammate Matt Renshaw earning a surprise selection.
Recent Form Result in Omission
Labuschagne has been omitted from the one-day international team after managing only a single run in each of his two innings during the recent series against South Africa in August. The right-hander has a top score of 47 in his last 10 ODI innings.
The batsman has played 68 one-day internationals and amassed 1,871 ODI runs at an average of 34.64, but will now continue to press his claims a Test recall ahead of the Ashes starting in Perth on 21 November.
Surprise Inclusion and Team Updates
Labuschagne has shown signs of a return to form with a score of 160 for Queensland in the Sheffield Shield this week, while Renshaw also hit a century for the Bulls in the identical match against Tasmania.
Renshaw is in line to make his first white-ball appearance in the upcoming series against India after last being included in an ODI squad in 2022.
Renshaw has played 14 Test matches with the most recent appearance in India in 2023 but is also hoping for a Test return as Australia look for a fix to their batting top-order problems.
Pace Returns and Injury Updates
Left-arm quick Mitchell Starc is back for the ODI series against India after taking a break since performing well for Australia in the 3-0 Test series sweep of West Indies in July.
Big Bash star Mitch Owen may earn his ODI debut after being concussed in the lead up to Australia’s last 50-over series against South Africa.
Skipper Pat Cummins is still unavailable as he hopes to heal from a back injury in time to lead Australia in the first Ashes Test in November.
Team Announcement Strategy and Fixtures
Australia have named a squad for only the first two T20s against India with the Ashes on the horizon, although Glenn Maxwell will sit out the five-match series due to a wrist injury sustained in New Zealand.
Mitch Marsh will captain both the ODI and T20 sides after scoring a hundred in the final game against New Zealand to secure a two-nil victory last week.
“We have named a squad for the ODI series and first two games of the T20 series as there will be player management through the back end of the series as players get ready for the summer through Sheffield Shield cricket,” selection chief George Bailey said.
“The bulk of the T20 squad will stay as a group as it’s an crucial phase in the build towards the T20 World Cup next year, however we are trying to strike a balance to ensure we simultaneously prepare specific players for the Test matches ahead.”
Australia’s three-game ODI series against India starts on 19 October in Perth, before the rivals play five T20 internationals from October 29.
