Over two dozen Olympic medallists, mentors and additional global sports figures have put their names to a letter urging a halt to the capital punishment of a boxing titleholder and trainer, who is facing execution in Iran.

Escalating Global Anger

Amidst growing worldwide anger over the country's expanding employment of executions as a tool of oppression, the forcefully phrased letter denounces the government's ruling to uphold the death sentence of Mohammad Javad Vafaei Sani.

Vafaei Sani, three decades old, from Mashhad in the northern province, was detained for being involved in countrywide demonstrations in the year 2019 and charged of backing an resistance movement. He has spent 60 months in detention, where he has been tortured and kept in seclusion.

“Sport is intended to encourage hope, togetherness, and courage,” the signatories expressed. “The capital punishment of a winner for his political views is a blatant attack on these principles and a warning to every athlete who dares to express dissent.

History of Executing Sports Figures

The statement pointed out that the boxer's situation was not an isolated one and emphasized Iran’s history of executing sports champions for their beliefs, including a national team leader, captain of the football side, and a volleyball captain, leader of the women's volleyball squad. In 2020, Navid Afkari, a 27-year-old Iranian sports titleholder, was also executed.

Additional supporters to the appeal comprise Tracy Edwards, who skippered the inaugural female-only team in a international sailing event and was the initial female to earn a prestigious sailing award; the previous captain of the soccer side an athlete; and a sports figure, who was in the national team for the global tournament.

Apprehension and Unjust Proceedings

Vafaei Sani was taken into custody in March 2020. The charges against him comprised “promoting decay on Earth through incendiarism and ruin of state assets”. His ruling has been reversed on two occasions but on October 4 it was upheld on the third attempt. His trial was condemned as “grossly unfair” by human rights activists and groups.

Appeal to International Body

The urging to stop the athlete's capital punishment comes after a previous appeal to the UN high commissioner for freedoms, backed by in excess of a hundred rights specialists and organizations, calling for action to prevent the sports figure's capital punishment.

Death Penalty Surge

According to findings, there is an “death penalty surge in Iran, which has attained alarming dimensions”. In the year 2023, officials put to death at least eight hundred fifty-three people – a 48% surge on 2022. Last year, statistics showed nine hundred seventy-two deaths, marking the maximum count since 2015. More than 800 people have been put to death so far in the current year.

Political prisoners and protesters are victims, notably in the aftermath of the 2022 protests. Specialists say the government have employed the capital punishment to suppress dissent, create fear among the population and reinforce their grip on authority.
