Substantial Online Disruption Impacts Dozens Sites and Apps

A large-scale internet failure has disrupted numerous sites and mobile apps worldwide, as users experiencing issues accessing the internet following issues at the online infrastructure platform.

The disrupted platforms include Snapchat, the gaming platform Roblox, Signal, and Duolingo, as well as multiple Amazon-managed platforms including its main retail site and the Ring doorbell device manufacturer.

In the UK, the financial institution Lloyds was disrupted along with its subsidiaries Halifax and Bank of Scotland, with additional accounts of issues using the HM Revenue and Customs website on the start of the week. Furthermore across the UK, several Ring device owners took to networks to report their doorbells were not working.

In the UK alone, reports of problems on particular apps ran into the tens of thousands for each platform.

The company stated that the outage originated in the Atlantic coast of the United States at AWS, a unit that supplies vital online framework for many businesses, who utilize resources on Amazon servers. Amazon Web Services is the biggest global web hosting platform.

Soon after the start of the day (PDT) in the US (8am BST), the company announced “higher problem frequencies and slowdowns” for Amazon's platforms in a region on the eastern US of the US. The widespread consequence appeared to disrupt platforms globally, with the Downdetector site indicating problems with the same sites in different parts of the world.

Cisco’s Thousand Eyes, a tool that monitors online failures, additionally noted a rise in outages on the start of the week, including several cases situated in the state of Virginia, the region of the AWS US-East-1 zone where AWS said the problems began.
