United Kingdom Expands Methanol Poisoning Advisory List with Eleven Destinations

Methanol warning sign

The UK Foreign Office has added eleven further nations to its official warning roster concerning the dangers of toxic alcohol contamination from contaminated spirits.

This updated warning now includes Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda following what officials describe as "an international surge in the number of reported cases" of toxic alcohol poisoning.

Only recently, the government had earlier added Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the existing list, in response to multiple notable cases including the deadly loss of six visitors in Laos in 2024.

Travellers are being warned that as little as minimal doses of industrial alcohol can lead to permanent eye damage or death within twelve to forty-eight hrs.

Exactly what is Toxic Alcohol and In what way is it Used?

Industrial alcohol is a toxic substance commonly used in coolant, car cleaning liquid, and paint thinner. This substance is not designed for ingestion.

While it is naturally produced during the production of beverages, licensed producers bring it down to low, safe levels for ingestion through the distillation process.

But in some countries, it is surreptitiously added into spirits to save money, and because it is tasteless and odourless, it is impossible to detect.

Official Guidance for Travellers

Foreign Office minister a senior official emphasized that each tourist should be aware of the indicators of methanol contamination.

"While drinking spirits abroad, choose well-known venues and steer clear of unlicensed drinks or unspecified beverages," Falconer warned.

"In case something feels off, such as a headache that's way worse than usual or blurred eyesight – seek medical attention right away."

The entire list of destinations noted as posing a risk of methanol poisoning presently covers: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
